Bill Johns headed the discussion with airplane layouts for construction that is due for this semester. A planned layout of the Piper Super Champ model was used to describe our plans for construction on the fuselage, airfoils, and rudders/elevators. The plane will be constructed out of composites and the idea was unanimous.

2)
The second item was plans for funding of this project and money donations. The group agreed that sponsers will be welcomed and money donation from other departments were needed as well as our own money for payment of supplies. This item will be discussed more thoroughly at next weeks meeting.

3)
The last item on our agenda for the last meeting was Construction Tips from Bill. Using a wood cut to frame the fuselage parts and vacuum-bagging the airfoils for strength and light weight durability. Plans have been made for each group member to assemble and build there own planes for flight. All plans for funding and materials will be discussed next week. Also on the agenda for next week:

Finding materials such as Formicha and other parts for the airfoil and chords.

Minutes from meeting on January 22nd 2002

Members Present:

Dr. Johns
Joshua Overn
Michael Derkey
Zak Valentine
Eva McGowan
Nick Lambert
Brian Schneider

Items on the Agenda for the night:

Funding for the rest of the semester and next term
Cost of materials and products
Pamphlets and Brochures for presentations for funding

1)
The group came up with various different ways to raise money for the rest of this year and next term for the competitions. The ideas included Sponsorship and donations from the University for building cost. Also, an idea by our group suggested sales of a type of toy plane. This plane is a small foam plane that flies by the thermals of the forehead. You can fly these planes just by walking. Sales of these planes to students would raise some money for the AIAA. The donations from CEAC would also help out extremely.

2)
The cost of the first initial production stage is estimated at around $750.00. The entire project however, before the competitions is estimated at about $8,000.00. $5,000.00 would be for transportation and expenses. The rest would be for materials and building. All the materials would be payed for by the funds except for radios and a battery charger. Those items would be at the cost of the individual.

3)
Pamphlets and brochures will be made to pass out telling students and citizens about the AIAA. These brochures would also accompany us to meetings for funds as a formal presentation. Work on the brochures will be immediately assessed.

Some topics that we will cover next week:

Funding
Building materials and production dates
Need for sodering gear and other tools
Formal presentation for the CEAC

Next meeting will be Tuesday, January 29th 2002 in Area 51 (DANA 51). Until Then.
